Brooks Benjamin is the reel deal By Janet Testerman-- Skirt Magazine June, 2008 Like his favorite movie, The Neverending Story, Brooks hopes his filmmaking career will be a never-ending story. The writer and director of Point of Fear and Boys of Summerville got his first take in college when a friend cast him in a sappy independent flick. “I’m not a great actor unless I’m by myself: then I’m Oscar-worthy,” he laughs. Also an elementary school teacher, Brooks compares actors to children (several of his students were in Boys of Summerville). “They need motivation and feedback. A good director doesn’t point fingers, but is patient and helps them prepare for scenes.” Brooks reels from good comedy, and for Boys of Summerville he scripted 40 funny scenes then wove the story through. “It’s an unconventional writing style,” he admits. He’ll submit the movie to 50 film festivals and as to whether he’s Hollywood-bound... “I want to stay local. It’s all about the story for me.” What’s the best thing about reading Skirt? Being able to delve deep into the minds of women, coming out understanding a little more about them, and realizing that they’re always going to be a lot smarter than you.
